Hypotheses and debates: Greece and India
Greek medicine in Tibet, humoral theory, links between India and China: what is proposed and what is debated.

What the sources say
Debated
Tibetan histories of medicine mention a “Greek” physician (called Galenos) at the imperial court in the 7th–8th centuries. Christopher Beckwith (1979) sees in this the trace of a real transmission of Galenic medicine; other scholars remain cautious about the historical value of these late accounts.

Debated
Kenneth Zysk (2021) argues that the Indian theory of the three doṣas owes part of its form to exchanges with the Greek world (the Hippocratic corpus). It is an argued but debated thesis, about Indian medicine in general, not the Medicine Buddha.

Debated
The influence of Indian Buddhist medicine on Chinese medicine is real but often overstated; C. Pierce Salguero re-examines a famous example and shows its literary character.

Belief
For believers, the Pure Land of lapis lazuli and the efficacy of the twelve vows are matters of faith; history cannot answer them.
